Green Seed Apartments is an innovative carbon neutral affordable housing property located in Portland, Oregon. The apartment building produces more energy than it uses, helping residents save money on monthly energy costs. The project received funding from the Oregon Housing and Community Services Multifamily Energy Program (OR-MEP) to install energy-efficient measures, including ground source heat pumps, triple pane windows, LED lighting, and heat pump water heaters.
Length: 3 minutes
In part two of the Green Seed Apartments case study, we take a closer look at the energy-efficient features that serve as the foundation of this innovative building.
See how a high-performance shell, ultra-efficient mechanical systems and ENERGY STAR appliances work together to result in a building that uses 64% less energy than a comparable apartment complex.
Length: 8 minutes
The Multifamily Overview of the 2019 Oregon Zero Energy Ready Commercial Code webinar is hosted by OR-MEP and the Oregon Department of Energy (ODOE) and focuses on the 2019 Oregon Zero Energy Ready Commercial Code. The current commercial energy code is applicable to projects permitted on or after January 1, 2020.
Length: 93 minutes
High Performance Ventilation Webinar Training .
The High Performance Ventilation webinar training provides attendees with an understanding of the importance of ventilation in multifamily buildings, as well as the different approaches and considerations for going beyond code-minimum practices.
Length: 53 minutes
Pushing the Envelope – Increasing Comfort, Durability, and Energy Performance
Pushing the Envelope – Increasing Comfort, Durability, and Energy Performance webinar training provides attendees with an understanding of the key benefits, approaches, and considerations for high-performance building envelopes.
Length: 46 minutes
Emerging Technologies – Drain Water Heat Recovery .
This training will provide a technology overview on drain water heat recovery (DWHR), including potential first cost and savings ranges for standard installations. The training will focus on three unique water heating configurations in multifamily buildings and how the technology can be folded into each scenario.
Length: 21 minutes
Multifamily Health and Safety .
This training highlights the impacts of energy efficiency improvements on the health and safety of residents, as well as the key building components that can signal health and safety issues. This training will build upon the Energy Audit 101 and Multifamily Building Operations trainings.
Length: 49 minutes
Emerging Technologies – Solar Thermal for Multifamily .
As part of our on-demand video training series showcasing emerging technologies, this month we highlight solar thermal hot water systems. Solar thermal water heaters can be a cost-effective way to generate hot water for your multifamily property.
Length: 9 minutes
Planning for Energy Efficiency Upgrades .
This training provides multifamily building professionals the recommended considerations and practices when planning an existing building retrofit with energy efficiency measures, by building upon the foundation of the Intentional Design and Energy Auditing 101 courses.
Length: 47 minutes
Effective Ventilation Strategies .
This training provides multifamily building professionals the recommended considerations and practices when planning an existing building retrofit with energy efficiency measures, by building upon the foundation of the Intentional Design and Energy Auditing 101 courses.
Length: 47 minutes
Emerging Technologies – Variable Refrigerant Flow .
Variable Refrigerant Flow, or VRF, systems are not new to residential, multi-family, or commercial markets. That said, full VRF systems are not quite the same as the now familiar “mini-split heat pump” systems that are prevalent in our construction and retrofit landscape in Oregon. VRF systems offer higher efficiency and increased controls, compared to other electric heating systems.
Length: 20 minutes
Energy Modeling Best Practices .
This training will familiarize multifamily building professionals on the fundamental concepts of whole building energy simulation as both a design tool for new construction and to support energy retrofits of existing buildings. This training shares modeling best practices and tools to support design optimization, workflow efficiency, and participation in the Multifamily Energy Program.
Length: 40 minutes
Energy Auditing 101 .
This training will provide multifamily building professionals and owners with an understanding of how energy audits can pinpoint where buildings lose energy and what improvements can be done to save money. Energy audits come in a variety of flavors – this training will outline the benefits of different types of energy audits from basic to comprehensive. We will also discuss how to apply this information to improve building efficiency, resident comfort, and owner costs, as well as how to apply for cash incentives for upgrades.
Length: 36 minutes
Intentional Design for Energy Efficiency – Recommended Practices
This was the first in a series of free webinar trainings, brought to you by the OHCS Multifamily Energy Program (OR-MEP).
Everyone in the construction decision making chain influences the energy efficiency, quality, and cost of any new construction or existing building retrofit project. This training will focus on connecting developers, property owners, architects, engineers, and energy consultants, to shift a portion of technical support to the pre-construction timeframe to improve the process for achieving the energy targets necessary to secure OR-MEP incentives.
